Every year the dams which conducted the most impressive work among all the nominated dams are selected by the Japan Dam Award committee consisting of selected dam enthusiasts for respective categories* from various different angles and finally those members and others participated in the final round of the selection process pick up the award winner in each category by vote.
For 2021, award selection ceremony was held at Tokyo Culture Culture in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo on 25 December 2021 by six presenters and the above-mentioned selective members and among those dams in different categories, Koishiwaragawa Dam was given Discharge Award out of nine candidates and Hitokura Dam was given Low Water Management Award out of three candidates.

The reasons behind the establishment of the dam awards
Dams are indispensable for our lives in that they secure the flood control, domestic water supply and power generation, etc. However, it is the fact that various dams’ performances in the area of flood and drought mitigation is not widely reported on mass media. Putting this fact in mind, dam enthusiasts formed the committee to play the role of disclosing such important activities of dams for publicity and revitalize and encourage the dam industry, in an effort of increasing the awareness of the dam’s functions and effects among general public.
